CBP Acting Commissioner Pete Flores addressed the Trade and Cargo Security Summit in New Orleans on May 6, 2025. During his remarks, he emphasized the importance of collaboration between U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the trade community.
Flores expressed gratitude to attendees for their participation, both in person and virtually, at the summit's fourth year. He highlighted CBP's role in fostering legitimate trade and travel while acknowledging recent successes that impact the trade community.
He stated: "This summit is an excellent opportunity for us to provide critical updates on CBP efforts and to hear about issues that are important to you engage with you on areas of shared interests and continue to strengthen our partnership."
Flores also discussed the Trump Administration's "America First" approach, noting that CBP is committed to supporting this vision by enforcing trade tariffs aimed at returning manufacturing jobs to U.S. shores. He said: "CBP remains steadfast in the enforcement of these measures designed to return manufacturing to U.S. shores."
Significant progress has been made in reducing illegal border crossings, which have decreased from thousands daily under previous administrations to 230 per day. This represents a 95% reduction. Flores noted that CBP is enhancing its capabilities against fentanyl trafficking through new partnerships and interdictions.
The Acting Commissioner also mentioned initiatives related to de minimis shipments, highlighting challenges such as intellectual property rights violations and drug smuggling associated with low-value packages. To address these issues, President Trump has eliminated de minimis entry for products from China and Hong Kong.
Regarding supply chain security, Flores emphasized CBP's commitment through partnerships with almost 11,000 members of CTPAT (Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism). He underscored international collaboration efforts with foreign customs administrations.
Flores concluded by discussing advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) within CBP operations: "It is our goal to leverage AI technology to better inform human decision-making." He expressed optimism about ongoing discussions during panels and breakout sessions over the next few days.
In closing remarks at the summit attended by many experts both physically present or connected virtually; he reiterated: "Our mission is essential... And through those 235 years of service we have always placed America first."
