A Trumbull man, Jack Jakups, has been sentenced to 41 months in federal prison for possessing firearms and ammunition as a felon. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Victor A. Bolden in New Haven. Following his imprisonment, Jakups will be subject to three years of supervised release.
Court documents reveal that Jakups' criminal record includes state felony convictions for narcotics possession, burglary, robbery, larceny, and escape offenses. After being released from prison in January 2019 into Connecticut’s Special Parole program, a search of his residence on November 30, 2021, led to the discovery of several firearms and over 300 rounds of ammunition. Among the items seized were a Diamondback 9mm handgun and two privately made firearms resembling a Glock-19 and an AR-15.
Federal law prohibits individuals with felony convictions from possessing firearms or ammunition that have moved through interstate or foreign commerce.
Jakups pleaded guilty on November 14, 2022, to unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition by a felon. He is currently out on a $50,000 bond but must report to prison on August 8.
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) with help from Connecticut State Parole. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Lauren C. Clark and A. Reed Durham under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which aims to reduce gun violence and other violent crimes through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities.
