Federal prosecutors in the Southern District of California have filed 176 border-related cases this week. The charges include assault on a federal officer, bringing in aliens for financial gain, reentering the U.S. after deportation, and importation of controlled substances.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California is one of the busiest federal districts due to its high volume of border-related crimes. This district covers San Diego and Imperial counties and shares a 140-mile border with Mexico. It includes the San Ysidro Port of Entry, noted as the world’s busiest land border crossing.
The district also handles proactive cases related to terrorism, organized crime, drugs, white-collar fraud, violent crime, cybercrime, human trafficking, and national security.
Recent arrests highlight some specific incidents:
On May 8th, Ismael Castro-Gonzalez was arrested and charged with assault on a federal officer and attempted entry as a removed alien. According to reports, Border Patrol agents were attacked by Castro when they tried to rescue him from barbed wire on the border wall.
On May 6th, Rosa Cervantez was arrested for importing controlled substances after attempting to cross into the U.S. with fentanyl and cocaine hidden in her car at Calexico West Port of Entry.
On May 7th, Salvador Hernandez was charged with importing methamphetamine through Otay Mesa Port of Entry using pedestrian lanes.
Also on May 7th, Jose Tomas Lopez-Navarro faced charges for attempted entry after deportation using a counterfeit passport at San Ysidro Pedestrian East Port of Entry.
Additionally, several defendants were recently convicted or sentenced for similar offenses:
Abner Leon-Mote was found guilty by a jury on April 30th for attempted reentry as a removed alien following an earlier conviction for felony assault with a deadly weapon.
Omar Laveaga-Flores received a sentence on May 5th for illegal reentry into the U.S., having previously been convicted in Arizona in 2022.
Juan Melgoza-Soto and Santiago Alfredo Gonzalez Hara were sentenced on May 8th for bringing an undocumented alien into the U.S., while Martin Josue Gutierrez received six months custody on May 9th for transporting certain aliens within his vehicle during an attempted stop by law enforcement.
