Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem has announced the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Afghanistan. The TPS designation, which is set to expire on May 20, 2025, will officially end on July 12, 2025.
The decision follows a mandatory review process that occurs at least 60 days before a TPS designation expires. This involves consultation with relevant U.S. government agencies to assess whether the conditions in the designated country still warrant protection under TPS.
“This administration is returning TPS to its original temporary intent,” stated Secretary Noem. She explained that after reviewing conditions in Afghanistan with interagency partners, it was determined that the requirements for a TPS designation are no longer met. “Afghanistan has had an improved security situation, and its stabilizing economy no longer prevent them from returning to their home country,” she added.
Noem also highlighted concerns related to national interest and public safety: "Additionally, the termination furthers the national interest as DHS records indicate that there are recipients who have been under investigation for fraud and threatening our public safety and national security."
The decision was based on findings from a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services review and consultations with the Department of State. It was concluded that improvements in Afghanistan's security and economic conditions mean that Afghan nationals can return without facing threats due to ongoing conflict or extraordinary conditions.
