On May 12, 2025, President Donald J. Trump issued a proclamation in recognition of Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week. The President emphasized the importance of honoring law enforcement officers who protect communities and memorializing those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
President Trump criticized the previous administration for what he described as policies that led to increased crime and difficulties for law enforcement. He stated, "Their reckless, soft-on-crime policies emboldened criminals and thugs; wreaked havoc on the sanctity of our homes, businesses, and public spaces; instilled fear; and jeopardized public trust."
As part of his administration's efforts to support law enforcement, President Trump reiterated his commitment to enhancing safety across America by strengthening border security and enforcing laws more strictly. He also mentioned his request to Congress to make an executive order permanent that mandates the death penalty for those convicted of murdering police officers.
In his proclamation, President Trump expressed solidarity with law enforcement personnel and their families: "We pray for those who grieve the fallen and pledge that their lives, legacies, and sacrifices will forever be remembered by our grateful Nation."
The observance is backed by a joint resolution approved on October 1, 1962 (Public Law 87-726) which authorizes the designation of May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day each year. The week containing this day is recognized as Police Week under Public Law 105-225.
President Trump concluded by calling upon Americans to participate in ceremonies during this period. He urged state governors and officials within U.S. jurisdictions to fly flags at half-staff on Peace Officers Memorial Day.
