Robert Gene Hiler, Jr., a 52-year-old man from Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, has been charged with failing to register as a sex offender. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania made the announcement. Hiler had been residing in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and recently lived in Los Angeles, California.
Acting United States Attorney John C. Gurganus stated that Hiler was required to register as a sex offender due to a previous conviction in Pennsylvania. The indictment claims that Hiler traveled across state lines and did not fulfill his obligation to register and update his registration as mandated by the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act.
The U.S. Marshals Service conducted the investigation into this case. Assistant U.S. Attorney David C. Williams is responsible for prosecuting the case.
Under federal law, if found guilty of this offense, Hiler could face a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, followed by supervised release and a fine. Any sentence would be determined by a judge who will consider applicable federal sentencing statutes and guidelines.
It is important to note that indictments and criminal informations are merely allegations at this stage. Individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
