Alison J. Ramsdell U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the District of South Dakota
United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell announced that a man from Mission, South Dakota, has been sentenced to over six years in federal prison for assault with a dangerous weapon. U.S. District Judge Eric C. Schulte handed down the sentence on May 13, 2025.
Charles Fast Horse Jr., 22, received a sentence of six years and six months in federal prison. Following his release, he will be under supervised release for three years and is required to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Fast Horse was indicted by a federal grand jury in August 2024 and entered a guilty plea on February 12, 2025.
The conviction relates to an incident that took place in April 2024 on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation. On April 28, Fast Horse was riding in a vehicle with several individuals, including the victim. After stopping at a residence in Mission, Fast Horse threatened the victim with a knife. The victim fled the vehicle, but Fast Horse picked up an axe from the yard and pursued him, striking him multiple times and causing life-threatening injuries.
The case was investigated by Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson.
Fast Horse was immediately placed into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service.
