WASHINGTON, May 14, 2025 – The American Petroleum Institute (API) has expressed approval following the House Energy and Commerce Committee's decision to advance its portion of the budget reconciliation bill. API President and CEO Mike Sommers said, "We applaud Chairman Brett Guthrie and the House Energy and Commerce Committee for advancing legislation to ensure a smart regulatory framework for expanded American energy development. We look forward to working with Congress to pass these critical provisions and are hopeful that the final package includes the permanent repeal of the punitive ‘methane fee.’"

API represents various segments of the U.S. natural gas and oil industry, which supports nearly 11 million jobs across the country. The organization is backed by a grassroots movement comprising millions of Americans. API's membership includes approximately 600 entities involved in producing, processing, and distributing most of the nation's energy resources.

The institute was established in 1919 as a standards-setting body and has since developed over 800 standards aimed at enhancing operational safety, environmental protection, efficiency, and sustainability. API members also participate in initiatives like "API Energy Excellence," which promotes technological advancements and transparent reporting to accelerate progress in environmental safety.
