WASHINGTON, April 8, 2025 — The American Petroleum Institute (API) has expressed support for President Trump's recent executive order aimed at safeguarding American energy from what it describes as "illegal state overreach." The order directs the Department of Justice to counteract actions by states such as New York and California, which are accused of imposing unconstitutional penalties on U.S. oil and natural gas producers.
Ryan Meyers, Senior Vice President and General Counsel at API, said: "We welcome President Trump's action to hold states like New York and California accountable for pursuing unconstitutional efforts that illegally penalize U.S. oil and natural gas producers for delivering the energy American consumers rely on every day. Directing the Department of Justice to address this state overreach will help restore the rule of law and ensure activist-driven campaigns do not stand in the way of ensuring the nation has access to an affordable and reliable energy supply."
API represents a wide range of segments within America's natural gas and oil industry, supporting nearly 11 million jobs across the United States. The organization consists of approximately 600 members who produce, process, and distribute a significant portion of the nation's energy. API is committed to advancing environmental and safety standards through initiatives like API Energy Excellence, which promotes technological innovation and transparent reporting.
Founded in 1919 as a standards-setting body, API has developed over 800 standards aimed at enhancing operational safety, efficiency, and sustainability within the industry.
