Matthew R. Molsen United States Attorney for the District of Nebraska | U.S. Attorney for the District of Nebraska
Calvin J. Carter, 22, and Malik M. Washington, 28, both from Omaha, Nebraska, have been sentenced in federal court for conspiracy to commit bank fraud. Chief United States District Judge Robert F. Rossiter, Jr. handed down the sentences on May 15, 2025. Both individuals received an 18-month prison term followed by a three-year supervised release period. Additionally, they were ordered to pay restitution amounting to $180,315.54.
From April 2021 through December 2022, Carter and Washington engaged in fraudulent activities by recruiting individuals with personal bank accounts across various financial institutions in Nebraska and beyond. They obtained these account details and used them to create counterfeit checks that appeared legitimate.
These fake checks were presented at financial institutions under false pretenses as genuine business-issued checks. Subsequently, cash was withdrawn from the accounts where these counterfeit checks had been deposited.
The fraudulent activities led to a financial loss of $180,315.54 during the conspiracy period.
The case was thoroughly investigated by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office alongside the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
