Restoration News announced that former U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger, who represented Virginia's 7th Congressional District, prioritized illegal immigrants over state residents and repeatedly opposed border security measures during her time in Congress.
According to PolitiFact, Spanberger voted with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi 92% of the time during her tenure in Congress, contradicting her frequent claims of bipartisan independence. Spanberger’s support for the Democratic leadership extended to immigration policy, where she consistently opposed measures tied to enforcement and detention. While she presented herself as centrist during campaigns, her voting record aligned strongly with the party's mainstream stance on border security.
According to the official roll call from the U.S. House Clerk, Spanberger voted against the Secure the Border Act (H.R. 2) in May 2023. The legislation included provisions for restarting border wall construction, expanding detention capacity, limiting asylum eligibility, and mandating E-Verify. She also voted against the bipartisan Laken Riley Act in 2024, which required the detention of illegal immigrants charged with violent crimes.
As reported by VPM News, Governor Glenn Youngkin’s administration launched a Homeland Security Operation that led to over 500 arrests of illegal immigrants in Virginia by spring 2024. Of those arrested, more than 130 were confirmed members of criminal organizations, including MS-13 and Tren de Aragua. This policy effort emphasized cooperation with federal authorities and demonstrated a contrasting approach to immigration enforcement compared to Spanberger’s record in Congress.
