U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins have signed a joint memorandum on wildfire preparedness to ensure coordination between their departments during the upcoming fire season. The Department of the Interior will collaborate with President Trump's cabinet and state, local, and tribal partners to enhance the nation's wildland firefighting efforts.
Before signing the memo, Secretaries Rollins and Burgum attended a 2025 operational fire briefing at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service National Fire Desk.
"Our mission is clear: protect lives, defend critical infrastructure, and preserve the natural landscapes that sustain our way of life," stated Secretary Burgum. He emphasized unity, preparation, and dedication as key elements in addressing this year's wildfires.
Secretary Rollins highlighted President Trump's directive for immediate federal action against wildfire risks: "Now more than ever, Secretary Burgum and I are working in lockstep, alongside our federal partners, to effectively combat wildfires." She assured that USDA is fully prepared to respond to what is anticipated to be an above-normal summer fire season by equipping the Forest Service with necessary resources.
May marks National Wildfire Awareness Month, encouraging Americans to contribute to reducing wildfire risk. Activities such as maintaining defensible space around homes and adhering to local fire restrictions are vital actions individuals can take.
