Alison J. Ramsdell U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the District of South Dakota
United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell announced that U.S. District Judge Eric C. Schulte has sentenced Kylie Leader Charge, a 19-year-old woman from Mission, South Dakota, for Larceny and Failure to Appear. The sentencing occurred on May 19, 2025.
Leader Charge received an eight-month federal prison sentence followed by three years of supervised release. Additionally, she was ordered to pay a $200 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund and $1,000 in restitution.
The charges originated from a November 2023 incident on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation where Leader Charge and a co-defendant stole a vehicle near Mission. They drove recklessly and caused damage to the vehicle.
After her indictment by a federal grand jury in February 2024, Leader Charge pleaded guilty on February 20, 2025. She was released on bond but failed to appear for a bail review hearing on March 21, 2024, leading to an additional indictment for Failure to Appear.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office prosecuted these cases under the Major Crimes Act, which requires certain violent crimes in Indian Country be tried in Federal court rather than State court.
Investigations were conducted by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services and the United States Marshals Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges handled prosecution duties.
Following sentencing, Leader Charge was remanded into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service.
