President Donald Trump announced a trade agreement in principle with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on May 8. The announcement coincided with the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day. This deal is seen as a significant achievement for the United States, particularly benefiting American farmers and ranchers.

The agreement aims to address the $49 billion trade deficit that rural America faced at the beginning of the year. It is expected to open opportunities for $5 billion in new U.S. exports to the UK, which includes over $700 million in ethanol exports and approximately $250 million in other agricultural goods like beef. Rice farmers from states such as Louisiana and Arkansas could gain up to $100 million in unrestricted access to the UK market.

This trade deal aligns with policies advocated by the America First Policy Institute’s Farmers First Agenda, which seeks to expand export opportunities for American agricultural products by eliminating tariff and non-tariff barriers imposed by other countries.
