Merrill man receives federal sentence for meth distribution

Timothy T. Duax U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa

Larry Snyder, Jr., a 44-year-old resident of Merrill, Iowa, was sentenced to federal prison on May 16, 2025. The sentencing took place in Sioux City after Snyder, Jr. pled guilty earlier this year to charges related to methamphetamine distribution.

According to court documents and evidence presented during the hearings, Snyder, Jr. was involved in a conspiracy from November 2023 through August 2024 to distribute over 1500 grams of methamphetamine in the Sioux City area. During four separate occasions in 2024, he distributed more than 650 grams of pure methamphetamine to an individual cooperating with law enforcement. One transaction occurred within close proximity—1000 feet—of an elementary school. Additional evidence revealed that on August 26, 2024, Snyder, Jr., along with a co-conspirator, possessed or were involved with another 479 grams of pure methamphetamine.

In September of the same year, Snyder attempted to evade capture by engaging in a high-speed chase followed by a foot pursuit before being apprehended by law enforcement agents.

The sentencing was presided over by United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand. Currently held by the United States Marshal's custody until his transfer to federal prison is arranged, Snyder received a sentence of 180 months' imprisonment and will serve five years of supervised release thereafter. Federal sentences do not allow for parole.

Assistant United States Attorney Shawn S. Wehde prosecuted the case following an investigation conducted by the Tri-State Drug Task Force based in Sioux City. This task force includes personnel from various agencies such as the Drug Enforcement Administration; Sioux City Police Department; Homeland Security Investigations; Woodbury County Sheriff’s Office; South Sioux City Police Department; Nebraska State Patrol; Iowa National Guard; Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement; United States Marshals Service; South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation; and Woodbury County Attorney’s Office.
