Halifax County felon receives prison sentence for firearm possession

Daniel P. Bubar Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina | U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina

Sakwon Artavas Bowser, a 29-year-old from Halifax County, has been sentenced to five and a half years in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Bowser admitted guilt to the charge on February 18, 2025.

Court records reveal that in June 2024, Bowser was wanted by the Halifax County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) for common law robbery. On June 6, 2024, officers attempted to stop Bowser as he exited a local mobile home park. Instead of complying, Bowser drove through a restaurant parking lot and accelerated rapidly. During the pursuit, he drove recklessly at speeds reaching 60 mph in a 35-mph zone and passed vehicles at stop signs. He eventually fled on foot after abandoning his moving vehicle.

The HCSO observed that Bowser carried a backpack during his escape attempt, which he discarded in a wooded area. Officers later discovered him hiding inside one of the mobile homes. A search of the abandoned backpack revealed multiple baggies of marijuana packaged for distribution, a loaded Glock 17 handgun, a digital scale, and U.S. currency.

Bowser's criminal history includes several offenses over ten years and features a felony conviction from 2018 for conspiracy to obtain property by false pretenses.

The announcement was made by Daniel P. Bubar, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina following sentencing by U.S. District Judge James C. Dever III. The investigation involved the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kimberly Dixon prosecuted the case.
