Acting United States Attorney Michael Simpson has announced the sentencing of Joel Becerra-Cesario, a 38-year-old Mexican national. On May 27, 2025, U.S. District Judge Darrel J. Papillion sentenced Becerra-Cesario to 27 months in prison for re-entering the United States after being deported. This action is a violation of Title 8, United States Code, Sections 1326(a) and 1326(b)(2).
Following his imprisonment, Becerra-Cesario will be deported back to Mexico. Court documents reveal that he was apprehended in Kenner around October 20, 2023. Becerra-Cesario had previously been deported on May 15, 2014, after a felony conviction for cocaine distribution.
U.S. Attorney Simpson acknowledged the efforts of U.S. Customs and Border Protection in investigating this case. Assistant United States Attorney Spiro G. Latsis from the General Crimes Unit is managing the prosecution.
