Last week, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy submitted two proposed rules to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs. These proposals focus on Beyond Visual Line of Sight Operations (BVLOS) and restricting Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) operations at fixed site facilities. This development has been met with approval from various stakeholders.
Lisa Ellman, CEO of the Commercial Drone Alliance, expressed support for the advancement of these rules. She said, "The CDA applauds the Trump Administration for advancing the BVLOS and Section 2209 rules forward." Ellman emphasized that outdated regulations threaten America's security and aviation leadership but believes that a proper framework can unlock benefits such as medical deliveries and emergency response.
Michael Robbins, CEO of the Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International, also commended Secretary Duffy and Administrator Rocheleau for their efforts. He noted, "Finalizing these rules is essential to unlocking the next chapter of uncrewed aviation—driving innovation, improving safety, and maintaining U.S. global competitiveness."
Suzanne Lemieux from the American Petroleum Institute highlighted the potential benefits of BVLOS in infrastructure inspections and emissions monitoring. David French from the National Retail Federation emphasized how drone delivery could enhance retail supply chains by providing ultrafast delivery options.
Ian Jefferies of the Association of American Railroads welcomed the proposals as a step toward enhancing infrastructure safety through routine BVLOS drone operations. The Small UAV Coalition expressed gratitude to Secretary Duffy for progressing these safety rules.
Adam Goldstein and Nikhil Goel from Archer Aviation announced their company's selection as the exclusive air taxi provider for the LA28 Olympic Games, emphasizing collaboration with federal agencies to integrate their aircraft into transportation plans for the event.
Overall, stakeholders are urging quick action on these proposed rules to provide regulatory clarity needed for growth in drone technology.
