USDOT updates pipeline safety regulations to reflect Gulf name change

The U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) has issued a Final Rule updating the U.S. Pipeline Safety Regulations. This change replaces references to the "Gulf of Mexico" with "Gulf of America," following Executive Order 14172, which was issued in January 2025.

The update affects Subpart D of Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations, specifically amending Parts 191, 192, and 195. According to U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy, "The Department of Transportation is proud to lead on President Trump’s historic order to champion our national language, and hegemony." He added that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has already updated pilot charts to reflect this renaming.

President Donald J. Trump's Executive Order 14172 is titled "Restoring Names that Honor American Greatness" and mandates this name change for official federal use. The new rule does not introduce any additional requirements for regulated entities in the private sector or non-federal agencies.

The amendments are effective immediately, and further details can be found on PHMSA's website.
