The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has announced the availability of nearly $4.9 billion in funding for major bridge projects through the Bridge Investment Program, along with up to $500 million for rural bridge repairs or replacements via the Competitive Highway Bridge Program. This initiative aims to address the numerous bridges across the United States, including approximately 42,000 that are in poor condition and require urgent repair.
Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy stated, "Under President Trump’s leadership, America is building again." He criticized previous requirements under the Biden administration that linked infrastructure funding to social justice and climate initiatives, describing them as a diversion from the department's primary mission.
The announcement highlights examples of previously removed requirements concerning climate change and environmental justice. These included considerations for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and addressing adverse environmental impacts on air quality and disadvantaged communities.
Similarly, diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), and workforce development requirements were also eliminated. These previously mandated assessments of equity impacts and efforts to create good-paying jobs while promoting workforce diversity.
Duffy emphasized that under President Trump's administration, America is focusing on rebuilding its infrastructure. The grants are intended to facilitate critical improvements needed for moving people and goods efficiently across the nation. This includes strengthening national supply chains and enhancing important freight travel corridors.
Further details on these funding opportunities can be accessed through FHWA's website or Grants.gov.
