The U.S. Department of Education has declared June as 'Title IX Month' to commemorate the fifty-third anniversary of Title IX of the Educational Amendments (1972). The month is dedicated to honoring women's achievements in securing equal educational opportunities. Throughout June, the department plans to highlight efforts to counter previous administration policies perceived as undermining Title IX and will introduce further measures to protect women's rights.

The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) within the department announced its first initiatives for 'Title IX Month.' Investigations have been launched into the University of Wyoming and Jefferson County Public Schools in Colorado. These investigations concern allegations that males were allowed into female-only spaces, which may violate Title IX provisions.

At the University of Wyoming, a man was reportedly permitted to join Kappa Kappa Gamma (KKG), a campus sorority. Members have filed a lawsuit against KKG for allowing male access to female-restricted living areas. Federal funding recipients must comply with Title IX requirements, which protect students from sex-based harassment and sexual assault.

Similarly, Jefferson County Public Schools faces scrutiny over policies that assign overnight accommodations based on gender identity rather than biological sex. Concerns arose when parents learned their 11-year-old daughter might share a bed with a male student during an overnight trip without prior notification from the school.

U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon stated, "The Department is recognizing June as ‘Title IX Month’ to honor women’s hard-earned civil rights and demonstrate the Trump Administration’s unwavering commitment to restoring them." She emphasized that Title IX ensures protections for women in educational settings, including sports and living accommodations.

Title IX prohibits sex-based discrimination in any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. It guarantees female students' rights to sex-segregated spaces and single-sex sororities.

Updates about 'Title IX Month' will be shared by the U.S. Department of Education on social media throughout June.
