Carl Emerson Travis, a 52-year-old resident of Sterling Heights, Michigan, has pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated assaults on federal officers. This announcement was made by United States Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon, Jr., with Cheyvoryea Gibson, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Michigan, also present.
Court documents reveal that on March 29, 2024, members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Apprehension Team attempted to arrest Travis, who was wanted across multiple jurisdictions. During the arrest attempt, Travis resisted and tried to flee using a moving car, putting nearby officers at risk. The situation escalated when Travis reversed his vehicle rapidly, dragging two officers and nearly hitting another. The confrontation ended when Travis's car collided with a parked vehicle, causing it to crash into an occupied hotel room wall.
The injured officers were treated for their injuries sustained during the incident. Sentencing for Travis is set for October 15, 2025. If convicted of assaulting a federal officer, he faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation with support from Michigan State Police. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Nhan Ho and Eaton Brown are leading the prosecution for this case.
