Jay Clayton, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, has announced the appointment of Sean Buckley as Deputy U.S. Attorney.

Buckley joins from Kobre & Kim, where he worked since 2018, handling various securities and criminal regulatory matters. Previously, he served nearly a decade at the U.S. Department of Justice, most recently as Co-Chief of the Office’s Terrorism and International Narcotics Unit. In this role, Buckley managed international investigations related to terrorism financing, economic espionage, sanctions violations, and anti-money laundering across multiple regions.

From 2009 to 2018, Buckley was an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of New York, dealing with national security and international criminal cases.

Before his government service, Buckley practiced law at Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP from 2003 to 2009. He holds degrees from Princeton University and the University of Virginia School of Law and has received honors such as the Attorney General's Distinguished Service Award.

Jay Clayton expressed enthusiasm about Buckley's return: “We are excited to welcome Sean Buckley back to the Office as the Deputy United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York,” said Clayton. “Sean demonstrated exceptional leadership and case-making skills during his prior service in the Office. He is deeply respected by the New York Bar and embodies the commitment to professionalism and the safety of the people of New York that runs through our Office.”

Clayton also highlighted Buckley's intellectual capabilities: “We are fortunate to once again benefit from Sean’s tremendous intellect and strategic thinking. With the combination of Sean, Amanda Houle, and Jeff Oestricher, I am confident that the Office could not have a more formidable and effective leadership team.”
