Man charged with false statement at border crossing

U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo announced the arrest of Oscar David Contreras Guzman, a 49-year-old citizen of El Salvador. Guzman faces charges for making a false statement, which could result in up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Sasha Mascarenhas, handling the case, detailed that on May 17, 2025, Guzman was driving a commercial truck with Maryland plates at the Lewiston Bridge Port of Entry. During primary inspection, he presented a Maryland State Driver’s License and claimed Mexican citizenship. He stated he had been denied entry into Canada after mistakenly turning onto the Lewiston Bridge en route to Michigan. Referred to secondary inspection for immigration status verification, Guzman again asserted Mexican citizenship and showed a Mexican Consular ID card. However, fingerprint analysis identified him as Oscar David Contreras Guzman from El Salvador, previously deported from the U.S. in April 2007.

This investigation is part of Operation Take Back America, aiming to combat illegal immigration and dismantle cartels and transnational criminal organizations while safeguarding communities from violent crime.

The investigation was conducted by Customs and Border Protection under Director of Field Operations Rose Brophy's leadership.

It is important to note that being charged with a crime is an accusation; Guzman remains presumed innocent until proven guilty.
