Guatemalan man sentenced for illegal reentry into U.S

A Guatemalan national, Elvis Alfonso Lopez-Perez, has been sentenced to eight months in prison for illegally reentering the United States. The sentence was delivered by United States District Judge Keli M. Neary. Lopez-Perez, 32, was residing in Carlisle, Pennsylvania at the time of his arrest.

Acting United States Attorney John C. Gurganus stated that Lopez-Perez had previously been removed from the United States on February 1, 2013. He later reentered the country without legal permission and was discovered in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania on May 28, 2024.

The case is part of Operation Take Back America, an initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration and dismantling transnational criminal organizations. This operation utilizes resources from the Department of Justice's Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhood.

The investigation was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations along with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Removal Operations. Assistant United States Attorney Michael Scalera handled the prosecution.
