The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced it will host a workshop to explore potential unfair or deceptive trade practices in "gender-affirming care" for minors. Scheduled for July 9, 2025, in Washington, DC, the event titled "The Dangers of 'Gender-Affirming Care' for Minors" will also be available via online streaming with a webcast link posted on FTC.gov on the day of the event.
The agenda will feature contributions from doctors, medical ethicists, whistleblowers, detransitioners, and parents of detransitioners. These participants will offer insights based on research and personal experiences.
This initiative follows President Trump's executive order which terminated federal support for "gender-affirming care" for minors. The order claims that such medical interventions can cause harm under the belief that they change a child's sex.
Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act grants the FTC authority to address unfair or deceptive acts or practices. This authority may apply if there is evidence that risks were not disclosed or false claims about gender-affirming care's benefits were made.
The workshop aims to assist the FTC in determining whether consumers have been exposed to misleading information about "gender-affirming care" and assessing any resultant harm.
Due to safety considerations, attendance at the event is by invitation only. Members of the public or press interested in attending should contact healthcareworkshop@ftc.gov.
The FTC's mission is to promote competition and protect consumers through education. It advises against demands for money, threats, instructions to transfer funds, or promises of prizes.
