Isabel Lopez, a 27-year-old resident of St. Paul, Minnesota, faces charges for assaulting law enforcement officers during the execution of federal search warrants on June 3, 2025. The announcement was made by Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Thompson.
The incident occurred as law enforcement officials from various federal agencies executed search warrants at eight locations in the Twin Cities area as part of an investigation into narcotics trafficking and other related offenses. This investigation initially began with the seizure of 900 pounds of methamphetamine valued between $22 million and $25 million.
One of the targeted sites was Cuatro Milpas restaurant on Lake Street in Minneapolis. As agents carried out their duties, a crowd gathered under the mistaken belief that immigration arrests were being conducted. Law enforcement clarified that their presence was solely to collect evidence under a federal warrant authorized by a judge, and no arrests were made that day.
Amidst legal protest activities by some crowd members, Lopez obstructed and assaulted several agents and officers by punching, kicking, and shoving them. She also threw a softball at a deputy from the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office while attempting to depart from the scene.
On June 9, Lopez was formally charged with Assaulting, Resisting, and Impeding Officers under 18 U.S.C. § 111(a)(1). During her arrest attempt by federal agents, she punched an FBI agent in the head.
A federal grand jury has returned a four-count indictment against Lopez on June 10. The charges include three counts related to assaults committed during the June 3rd operation and one count for obstructing law enforcement during civil disorder under 18 U.S.C. § 231(a)(3).
Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Thompson stated: “As laid out in the complaint... it is against the law to assault or obstruct federal law enforcement agents."
Special Agent Alvin M. Winston Sr., Special Agent Jamie Holt from ICE Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), ATF Special Agent Travis Riddle, and IRS Criminal Investigation's Ramsey E. Covington all emphasized that violence against officers will not be tolerated.
Lopez appeared before Magistrate Judge John F. Docherty in U.S District Court today for her initial appearance; she remains detained pending further hearings.
