U.S. Border Patrol agents have discovered and dismantled a sophisticated drug smuggling tunnel connecting Tijuana, Mexico, to the San Diego area. The tunnel, still under construction when found in early April by the San Diego Sector Tunnel Team, extended over 1,000 feet into U.S. territory.
The discovery occurred beneath the Otay Mesa Port of Entry. Preliminary investigations indicated that the tunnel was intended to exit near or within a commercial warehouse space. Equipped with electrical wiring, lighting, ventilation systems, and a track system for transporting large quantities of contraband, the tunnel was designed for extensive narcotics smuggling operations.
Upon entry into the tunnel, agents encountered several makeshift barricades placed by workers attempting to hinder progress southward and obscure the tunnel's origin. The entire length of the passage measured 2,918 feet with dimensions of 42 inches in height and 28 inches in width, reaching depths of approximately 50 feet underground.
On Monday, coordinated efforts between U.S. Border Patrol agents and Homeland Security Investigations alongside Mexican authorities led to locating the entrance within a residence in Nueva Tijuana. Mexican officials executed a warrant at this location where they discovered that recent tile work concealed the entrance.
Jeffrey D. Stalnaker, Acting Chief Patrol Agent of the San Diego Sector stated: “As we continue to strengthen the nation’s air and maritime border security, it’s not surprising that foreign terrorist organizations would resort to underground routes.” He emphasized that disrupting such tunnels is crucial for protecting American lives and commended both Tunnel Team agents and Mexican law enforcement partners for their efforts.
Since 1993, more than 95 tunnels have been identified and closed down in San Diego alone. Immediate remediation plans involve filling this newly discovered tunnel with concrete to prevent its use by foreign terrorist organizations.
To combat illicit activities such as human trafficking and drug smuggling along border corridors effectively remains a priority for U.S. Border Patrol which encourages reporting suspicious activity via emergency services or directly contacting local sector offices.
