A 43-year-old Brazilian national residing in Somerville has been charged with unlawful reentry into the United States following his arrest by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in Boston. Paulo Vinicius Cardozo-Pereira was indicted by a federal grand jury on June 9, accused of re-entering the country illegally after being previously deported.
ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston acting Field Office Director Patricia H. Hyde stated, "Paulo Vinicius Cardozo-Pereira has allegedly illegally re-entered the United States after having previously been removed by ICE." She added that Cardozo-Pereira "has apparently shown a blatant disregard for U.S. immigration laws, and now he will be forced to answer for his actions."
Cardozo-Pereira was originally deported from the United States on July 25, 2014. The indictment alleges that he returned to the country without permission sometime after this date.
The accused is scheduled to appear in federal court in Boston on June 24 to face the charge. If convicted, he could face up to two years in prison, one year of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000. ICE intends to seek his removal from the United States upon completion of any sentence imposed by the federal district court.
