A Williston man has been charged with attempting to evade over $1 million in tax payments. The United States Attorney's Office for the District of Vermont announced that John Caleb Wright, 43, was indicted by a federal grand jury on June 12, 2025. His arraignment is scheduled for July 22 before United States Magistrate Judge Kevin J. Doyle in Burlington.

Court records indicate that after being notified by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) about enforced collection measures due to his tax debt, Wright allegedly moved his cryptocurrency assets twice in 2021. These assets were transferred from an exchange accessible to the IRS to an unhosted wallet beyond their reach.

The United States Attorney’s Office reminds that an indictment contains only allegations and Wright is presumed innocent until proven guilty. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison. The actual sentence would be determined by the District Court with guidance from advisory sentencing guidelines and statutory factors.

Acting United States Attorney Michael P. Drescher acknowledged the investigatory efforts of the IRS Criminal Investigation team.

Assistant United States Attorney Corinne Smith is prosecuting the case while Brooks McArthur, Esq., represents Wright.
