Texas Hold’em Initiative cancels over 1,000 CDLs since inception

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

Laredo Sector Border Patrol has reported the cancellation of over 1,000 Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDLs) since the Texas Hold'em Initiative began in 2008. The initiative has led to the revocation of 1,053 CDLs, with 848 cancellations linked to human smuggling and 205 related to narcotic smuggling cases. In the fiscal year 2025 alone, there were 141 CDL cancellations made in collaboration with the Department of Public Safety.

The Texas Hold'em initiative utilizes state laws to permanently revoke CDLs from individuals convicted of felony smuggling charges while operating commercial vehicles. The program's success is attributed to enhanced communication and information sharing between law enforcement agencies and transportation stakeholders.

Border Patrol agents involved in this initiative conduct regular educational outreach for those in the transportation industry. These sessions aim to raise awareness about the risks associated with human and narcotic smuggling.

Launched in June 2008, this joint effort by the Texas Department of Public Safety and U.S. Border Patrol aims to bolster border security by penalizing commercial drivers involved in smuggling activities.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) encourages community involvement by reporting suspicious activities anonymously at 1-800-343-1994. CBP stands as America's largest law enforcement organization dedicated to protecting national security through various innovative measures.
