New Orleans man sentenced for violating federal gun control laws

Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson announced that Jenard Walton, also known as Janard Walton, has been sentenced to 37 months in prison by United States District Judge Jane Triche Milazzo. The 41-year-old New Orleans resident was charged with being a felon in possession of firearms. Following his imprisonment, Walton will be on supervised release for three years and must pay a $100 mandatory special assessment fee.

The charges stem from a federal search conducted at Walton's residence on March 19, 2024. During the search, law enforcement discovered a Springfield nine-millimeter caliber semi-automatic pistol wrapped in a towel inside a kitchen cabinet and approximately one and a half pounds of marijuana. A hidden compartment under the stairs contained a stolen Smith & Wesson .40 caliber pistol and about $37,941 in cash. Records revealed that Walton had at least five felony convictions and was legally prohibited from possessing firearms.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. On May 26, 2021, the Department launched a strategy to enhance PSN by focusing on community trust, supporting violence prevention organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and evaluating results.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Slidell Police Department investigated this case. Assistant United States Attorney Sarah Dawkins from the Violent Crime Unit prosecuted it.
