U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Progreso Port of Entry have detained a man wanted in New Mexico for an alleged sexual crime against a child. The apprehension occurred on June 24 when CBP officers at the Donna International Bridge referred Arnoldo Jaramillo, a 22-year-old U.S. citizen, for secondary inspection.

Port Director Michael Martinez of the Progreso/Donna Port of Entry stated, "Our frontline CBP officers continue to maintain resolute vigilance in screening arriving travelers and that mission dedication yielded the apprehension of a man wanted in connection with a sex crime involving a child." He emphasized that such apprehensions illustrate the law enforcement work undertaken by their officers to secure borders and keep communities safe.

The secondary inspection led to biometric verification through law enforcement databases confirming an outstanding felony warrant for rape of a child issued by the Carlsbad Police Department in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Following this confirmation, Jaramillo was handed over to Donna Police Department officers for transport to jail and adjudication of the warrant.

The National Crime Information Center (NCIC) serves as a centralized automated database designed to share information among law enforcement agencies, including outstanding warrants for various offenses. Previous arrests made by CBP officers based on NCIC information include individuals wanted for crimes such as homicide, escape, money laundering, robbery, narcotics distribution, sexual child abuse, fraud, larceny, and military desertion. It is noted that criminal charges are merely allegations and defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
