Federal charges have been filed against a 32-year-old Salvadoran man following an operation by ICE Boston. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts indicted Jose Leonardo Gutierrez-Mendez on June 9 for unlawful reentry after deportation.

ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston apprehended Gutierrez-Mendez during a targeted operation on May 8. According to Patricia H. Hyde, acting Field Office Director of ICE Boston, "Jose Leonardo Gutierrez-Mendez blatantly disregarded U.S. immigration laws and illegally took up residence in Lynn after a previous deportation." She emphasized that ICE Boston prioritizes public safety by arresting and removing illegal aliens from New England communities.

Gutierrez-Mendez was previously removed from the United States to El Salvador in August 2014. He reentered the country at an unknown time and location without inspection or authorization from U.S. immigration officials, residing in Lynn until his recent arrest.

If convicted, Gutierrez-Mendez could face up to two years in prison, one year of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000. Deportation is also likely upon completion of any sentence.

The public is encouraged to report crimes or suspicious activities by calling 866-DHS-2-ICE (866-347-2423) or using the online tip form.
