Secretary Sean P. Duffy has emphasized the need for a new air traffic control system in the United States, attributing this initiative to President Donald Trump's infrastructure efforts. Duffy recently attended the Paris Air Show, where he observed advancements in aviation technology and noted France's modernization of its air traffic control systems, which have improved efficiency by over 34 percent.
Duffy criticized the previous administration for focusing on identity politics rather than addressing airspace vulnerabilities. He stressed that while flying remains safe due to existing redundancies, the current system is outdated and struggles with modern demands such as drones and commercial spacecraft.
To address these issues, Duffy introduced a plan for a new air traffic control system, calling for Congress to pass what he refers to as the "One, Big, Beautiful Bill." This legislation would provide $12.5 billion in funding to begin updating critical equipment like radar and fiber optic lines. Although more funding will be needed, Duffy views this as an essential starting point.
He highlighted recent improvements at Newark Airport following outages and delays as evidence of what can be achieved with proper investment. The bill has garnered support from major American airlines and over 50 aviation organizations within the Modern Skies Coalition.
Duffy urged Congress to act swiftly, stating that each day without funding delays necessary upgrades. He believes that passing the bill will help define aviation for the next century and maintain safety standards.
