Michael P. Drescher Acting United States Attorney for the District of Vermont | U.S. Attorney for the District of Vermont
Noor Mohamed, a 25-year-old resident of Burlington, Vermont, faces charges for being a felon in possession of ammunition. The United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Vermont announced the charge following an incident on Church Street. Mohamed is currently in state custody, and his federal court appearance has yet to be scheduled.
Court records reveal that on June 21, 2025, shortly after 2:00 a.m., Mohamed caused a disturbance involving a firearm. When Burlington Police Department officers attempted to detain him, he resisted and reached for a loaded gun in his waistband. This led to a struggle between Mohamed and law enforcement officers amidst an agitated crowd. Officers eventually secured Mohamed and retrieved the weapon—a Glock-style handgun with scratched serial numbers—loaded with thirteen rounds.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office notes that these are allegations at this stage, and Mohamed is presumed innocent until proven guilty. If convicted, he could face up to 15 years in prison. Sentencing would be determined by the District Court based on guidelines and statutory factors.
Acting United States Attorney Michael P. Drescher praised the Burlington Police officers for their actions during the incident: “The responding Burlington Police officers demonstrated bravery and skill by safely disarming Mr. Mohamed, despite his vigorous resistance and the presence of the agitated crowd.” He further commended local law enforcement partners' investigative efforts.
Shawn Burke, Interim Chief of the Burlington Police Department, commented: “This incident highlights the dangers our officers face and their selfless commitment to keeping Burlington safe.”
Assistant United States Attorney Nicole Cate is prosecuting the case. Information about Mohamed's attorney is currently unavailable.
This case falls under Operation Take Back America, an initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration and violent crime through coordinated efforts from various Department of Justice task forces.
