The U.S. Department of Labor has announced the allocation of over $37 million in grants to assist veterans who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness. The funds are aimed at helping these individuals find employment and reintegrate into the workforce.

These grants are part of the Homeless Veterans’ Reintegration Program, managed by the department’s Veterans’ Employment and Training Service (VETS). This program provides occupational skills training, connects veterans with Registered Apprenticeships or other on-the-job training, and offers job search and placement services.

The VETS awards these grants through a competitive process to various organizations including nonprofit and for-profit entities, Native American Tribal governments, state and local workforce development boards, government agencies, higher education institutions, as well as faith-based and community organizations.

"Through the program’s services," states a release from the department, "veterans experiencing or at risk of homelessness can learn occupational skills, participate in apprenticeships or on-the-job training opportunities, and receive job search and placement assistance."

In fiscal year 2024, several organizations have been awarded funding for their second year under this grant program. Among them are Aletheia House Inc. in Birmingham, AL receiving $600,000; Volunteers of America of Los Angeles in CA also receiving $600,000; PATH in Los Angeles receiving $600,000 for service delivery areas including Los Angeles and San Diego; among others.

Additionally, several recipients will receive funding for their third year from fiscal year 2023 allocations. Notable mentions include Volunteers of America Southeast Inc. in Mobile AL with $214,654; United States Veterans Initiative in Phoenix AZ with $300,000; Insights Housing in Berkeley CA with $500,000; among others.
