The Stimson Center has announced the passing of its co-founder, Dr. Barry Blechman, a figure known for his dedication to peace and security over more than five decades. Blechman's career spanned roles in government and the private sector, including positions at the Departments of State and Defense, the Office of Management and Budget, and as an appointee by President Carter to the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency.
Blechman was committed to reducing nuclear dangers throughout his life. He expressed this commitment poignantly: “[S]ixty plus years after a young boy hid under his desk waiting for the flash that would signal the coming end of the world, I’m still trying to eliminate the risk of nuclear war. We’ve made some progress, and I like to think that I and Stimson played important roles in what was accomplished. But, even though far fewer in number, the damned things still exist and that flash could occur at any second… destroying all that we love.”
He emphasized the importance of perseverance with these words: “All I can say is that it is essential for all of us to keep trying.”
Brian Finlay, President and CEO of Stimson Center, paid tribute to Blechman’s influence: “Barry’s fierce, lifelong commitment to making the world a safer place was irrepressible. His depth of spirit and his professional drive were contagious, and his legacy of impact in the reduction of nuclear dangers lives on today.” Finlay added that Blechman's legacy continues through Stimson's ongoing work.
Blechman served as chairman of Stimson’s Board from 1989 until 2007 before returning in 2014. He also founded DFI International Inc., serving as CEO until its sale in 2007.
His career included associations with institutions such as Brookings Institution, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Center for Naval Analyses, and Center for Strategic and International Studies. Additionally, he served on Formtek Inc.'s board.
An academic with a PhD from Georgetown University, Blechman taught at various universities and authored or edited numerous works on national security issues. His last book was published in May 2020.
Barry Blechman leaves behind a legacy cherished by friends and colleagues who will miss him dearly.
