Somerset man charged with distributing drugs causing fatality

A Somerset County man has been indicted on charges related to the distribution of fentanyl and heroin, which allegedly resulted in a fatality. The indictment was announced by U.S. Attorney Alina Habba.

Thomas Kane Miller, aged 40 from Somerset, New Jersey, faces multiple charges including possession with intent to distribute fentanyl, heroin, and a fentanyl precursor (4-ANPP), as well as distribution resulting in death. His initial court appearance is set for June 30, 2025, before Judge Robert Kirsch in Trenton federal court.

"The fentanyl epidemic has devastated communities across the country. Too many lives have been lost," said U.S. Attorney Alina Habba. "This office is unwavering in its pursuit of justice."

DEA New York Special Agent Frank Tarentino stated, "Mr. Miller’s victim was more than just another statistic; it’s a life cut short by greed."

Homeland Security Investigations New York acting Special Agent Michael Alfonso added that this case serves as a reminder of the ongoing threat posed by illegal narcotics.

Court documents reveal that in October 2022, Miller allegedly distributed a mixture of fentanyl and heroin leading to an individual's death in Plainfield, New Jersey. Law enforcement found evidence linking Miller to the scene.

The charge related to drug distribution resulting in death carries severe penalties including a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years imprisonment and potentially life imprisonment along with a fine up to $1 million.

The investigation involved collaboration among several law enforcement agencies including DEA New York Strike Force and HSI New York. It was part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) initiative aimed at dismantling major drug trafficking operations.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Katherine M. Romano is representing the government in this case. The indictment's allegations remain accusations until proven otherwise in court.

Defense counsel includes Timothy Donahue and Michael Alexander Thomas.
