West Nanticoke man indicted on drug trafficking charges

A West Nanticoke resident, Daniyel Jamal Heyward, has been indicted on charges related to drug trafficking by a federal grand jury. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced the indictment.

Acting United States Attorney John C. Gurganus stated that Heyward, aged 45, faces charges for possession with intent to distribute cocaine on February 13, 2025. Additionally, he is charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine from January 1, 2025, to February 13, 2025.

The investigation was conducted by the Luzerne County Drug Task Force and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Luisa Honora Berti is responsible for prosecuting the case.

This legal action falls under Operation Take Back America, an initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration and dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations. The operation aligns efforts from the Department of Justice's Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhoods.

If convicted under federal law, Heyward could face up to 40 years in prison, supervised release after imprisonment, and fines. Sentencing would be determined by a judge based on federal statutes and guidelines.

It is important to note that indictments are merely allegations; individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
