United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell announced that Thaddeus James Grant, a resident of Lower Brule, South Dakota, has been sentenced for assaulting, resisting, and impeding a federal officer. The sentencing was carried out by U.S. District Judge Eric C. Schulte on June 23, 2025.

Grant, aged 32, received a two-year federal prison sentence followed by three years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The case against Grant began with an indictment by a federal grand jury in November 2024. He entered a guilty plea on March 27, 2025.

The incident occurred on September 20, 2024, when officers from the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) attempted to arrest Grant under a federal warrant at the Lower Brule Sioux Indian Reservation. During the arrest attempt, Grant resisted by pulling his hands away and bringing one officer to the ground. Compliance was eventually achieved through pressure points applied by the officers.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs - Office of Justice Services conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Wayne Venhuizen prosecuted the case.

Following sentencing, Grant was remanded into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service.
