The United States Secret Service, a division of the Department of Homeland Security, is celebrating its 160th anniversary. Established on July 5, 1865, the agency was initially tasked with combating widespread counterfeiting that posed a threat to the U.S. economy. At that time, nearly half of all currency in circulation was counterfeit.

Over the years, the mission of the Secret Service has evolved significantly. While it continues to protect U.S. currency, its responsibilities have expanded to include safeguarding the President, senior national leaders, foreign dignitaries, and major national events. The agency's reputation for duty, loyalty, and courage remains steadfast after 160 years.

Recent recruitment efforts have seen substantial success following directives from President Trump and Secretary Noem to eliminate discriminatory diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and hiring practices. This change has led to over 22,000 applications being received by the agency—a 200% increase compared to the same period in 2024 when only 7,000 applications were submitted.

Secretary Noem expressed gratitude towards the Secret Service for their continued dedication: “When others step back, the United States Secret Service steps forward -shielding America from unseen threats with sharp eyes and steadfast courage. Thank you to the US Secret Service for 160 years of service to our nation!”
