A Greenup County man has been sentenced for receiving child pornography. Geoffrey Potts, 25, from Flatwoods, Kentucky, received a sentence of 114 months in prison on Monday. Chief U.S. District Judge David Bunning delivered the sentence.
Potts' plea agreement reveals that law enforcement linked his residence to an IP address used for downloading child pornography in March 2024. A search of Potts' cellphone uncovered over 219 images and 45 videos depicting minors in sexually explicit conduct.
Federal law mandates that Potts serve at least 85 percent of his sentence. Following his release, he will be supervised by the U.S. Probation Office for 15 years.
The sentencing was announced by Paul McCaffrey, Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky; Olivia Olson, Acting Special Agent in Charge at the FBI's Louisville Field Division; Col. Phillip J. Burnett, Jr., Commissioner of the Kentucky State Police; and W. Todd Kelley, Chief of the Ashland Police Department.
The investigation involved collaboration between the FBI, Kentucky State Police (KSP), and Ashland Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Erin Roth is handling prosecution duties.
This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative started in 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The program combines resources from federal, state, and local levels to identify offenders and rescue victims effectively.
