Lawmakers urge Google CEO Pichai on AI use against CCP-linked online scams

Today, Chairman John Moolenaar and Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi of the United States House Select Committee on Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party sent a bipartisan letter to Google CEO Sundar Pichai. The letter commends Google for its ongoing efforts in using artificial intelligence to filter scam text messages and tackle malicious online advertisements and browser-based scams linked to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

The lawmakers highlighted Google's critical role in defending users against harmful digital activities orchestrated by entities with ties to the CCP. They expressed concern over scams like "pig butchering," where fraudsters deceive victims into investing in fake cryptocurrency, as well as tech support scams that can harm vulnerable Americans financially and emotionally.

The letter pointed out particular concerns about scams originating through malicious ads or deceptive pop-ups, which often target seniors. These scams can trick individuals into granting remote access to their computers or paying for unnecessary software.

The lawmakers emphasized that transnational criminal organizations are causing billions in losses annually, with pig butchering scams significantly contributing to an estimated $10 billion in crypto fraud in 2024.

They requested information from Google on several topics:

- Updates on technologies deployed to block malicious ads and browser-based tech support scams linked to CCP-linked criminal enterprises.

- Development of AI-driven filtering and scam-detection capabilities within Google Chrome.

- Steps taken to reduce malicious advertisements on Google's platforms.

- Engagement with federal law enforcement to protect Americans from CCP-linked scams.

The lawmakers concluded by stating, "Congress must and will continue to stand up for older Americans and others who are victimized by these CCP-linked scammers. And we appreciate Google’s continued partnership and leadership with respect to these efforts."
