Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Kuala Lumpur. During the meeting, Secretary Rubio congratulated Prime Minister Anwar on Malaysia’s successful year as ASEAN Chair and expressed gratitude for hosting the ASEAN-related Foreign Ministers’ Meetings. He also reaffirmed the United States' commitment to the U.S.-Malaysia Comprehensive Partnership and discussed ways to strengthen economic and security ties.
The discussion included promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific, enhancing defense and security cooperation through maritime law enforcement operations in the South China Sea, and strengthening cooperation in civil nuclear energy, critical minerals, and advanced technology. Both leaders emphasized building resilient critical mineral supply chains and securing AI chip technologies. The importance of advancing their partnership for mutual benefit was underscored.
