On July 7, 2025, a shooting incident occurred at the U.S. Border Patrol Rio Grande Valley Sector Annex in McAllen, Texas. A 27-year-old male U.S. citizen arrived at the facility and began firing an AR-15 style rifle after exiting his vehicle.

A Law Enforcement Information System Specialist on site returned fire with his pistol but faced a malfunction and subsequently called 911 to report the active shooter situation. The suspect attempted to enter the building by firing at and physically trying to open the doors but was unsuccessful.

McAllen Police Department officers arrived shortly after, followed by three Border Patrol agents who engaged with the suspect near a pedestrian gate. Despite orders to drop his weapon, the suspect fired upon them. The agents returned fire, resulting in injuries that led to the suspect's collapse.

Emergency medical services were requested immediately after securing the suspect's weapons. Upon arrival at approximately 6:10 a.m., EMS found no signs of life, and a local justice of the peace pronounced him deceased from gunshot wounds sustained during the exchange.

The police officer present suffered shrapnel injuries and was taken for surgery, while another agent and specialist received treatment for minor injuries.

An autopsy conducted on July 8 determined that death resulted from a gunshot wound to the head and was ruled as homicide. Several agencies including CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility are investigating this incident.

"U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is America's frontline: the nation's largest law enforcement organization," noted officials regarding their ongoing role in national security efforts.
