House committee urges sanctions on Hong Kong police commissioner

This week, Chairman John Moolenaar and Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi of the House Select Committee on China sent a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio. They urged him to consider sanctions against Hong Kong Police Commissioner Joe Chow Yat-ming.

The commissioner is said to be a key figure in the Chinese Communist Party's actions against democracy and Hong Kong's autonomy.

In March 2025, Secretary Rubio sanctioned former Hong Kong Police Commissioner Raymond Siu. This move was seen as a message of support for Hong Kongers. Shortly after the sanctions, Siu retired.

The letter stated: "Unfortunately, Chinese Communist Party-directed officials in Hong Kong continue to undermine its autonomy and freedoms." It highlighted incidents during the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre where police actions were described as intimidating towards mourners and passersby. Individuals were detained for holding flowers, displaying electric candles, or gathering in a park.

The United States aims to uphold human rights and democracy globally as authoritarianism expands under the CCP.
