U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers seized 12 firearms and 28 magazines at the Bridge of the Americas international crossing in El Paso on July 3. The items also included rifle optics, buttstocks, and a handgun lower receiver. A 33-year-old female Mexican citizen was arrested in connection with the case.
Hector Mancha, CBP El Paso Director of Field Operations, stated: “The intermittent pulse and surge southbound operations that CBP officers perform at area ports will often identify individuals attempting to smuggle weapons, ammunition, unreported currency and other violations.” He emphasized that these enforcement actions are crucial for maintaining safety in border communities.
The seizure occurred just before 8 p.m. when a Volkswagen Virtus approached the outbound inspection area. The vehicle was selected for an intensive examination. An x-ray exam revealed anomalies in the doors where multiple plastic-wrapped guns and firearm components were concealed.
The driver was arrested by CBP officers and handed over to Homeland Security Investigations for charges related to the smuggling attempt.
CBP is recognized as America's largest law enforcement organization and the world's first unified border management agency. It employs over 65,000 personnel who protect America across various terrains while facilitating safe travel and trade to ensure economic prosperity.
