Senator Dan Sullivan and Representative Chris Smith have been appointed to lead the Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC) during the 119th Congress. Senator Sullivan will serve as Chair, while Representative Smith will take on the role of Co-Chair for this bipartisan body. Additional members include Representatives James P. McGovern, Elise Stefanik, Zach Nunn, Jen Kiggans, and Dale Strong, alongside Senators Jeff Merkley, Tom Cotton, Tammy Duckworth, Andy Kim, and Lisa Blunt Rochester.
Senator Sullivan expressed his honor in being appointed by the Senate Majority Leader to chair the commission alongside Co-chairman Congressman Chris Smith. He stated: “Make no mistake, the Chinese Communist Party is our nation’s biggest foreign threat.” Sullivan emphasized the need for strategic resolve and cooperation between Congress and the executive branch to leverage U.S. advantages over China.
Representative Smith remarked on the critical moment in U.S.-China relations: “Helping the Administration chart a common-sense China policy is one of the most consequential tasks of this Congress.” He highlighted issues such as Taiwan and China's aggressive transnational repression as key focus areas.
This appointment marks Senator Sullivan's first time serving as Chair of CECC since joining in 2023. He also chairs two subcommittees related to armed services and commerce. Congressman Smith has been part of CECC since 2007 and has chaired it four times previously. Known for his human rights advocacy, he currently leads subcommittees on Africa and human rights issues.
