An intense weeklong search for Benjamin Hanil Song, the alleged shooter at Prairieland Detention Center on July 4th, has concluded with his arrest by FBI agents in Dallas, Texas. The announcement was made by Acting United States Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, Nancy E. Larson.
Song's arrest marks the fourteenth in this case. Court documents indicate that Song, a former United States Marine Corps reservist, participated in an organized attack against officers at the detention center on July 4th. He faces federal charges including three counts of attempted murder of federal agents and three counts of discharging a firearm related to a crime of violence.
Ten other individuals were charged with similar offenses in a complaint filed on July 7th. These include Cameron Arnold, Savanna Batten, Nathan Baumann, Zachary Evetts, Joy Gibson, Bradford Morris, Maricela Rueda, Seth Sikes, Elizabeth Soto, and Ines Soto. Daniel Rolando Sanchez Estrada was also charged on July 7th with obstruction of justice for concealing evidence after communicating with Rueda while she was in custody. Additionally, John Thomas and Lynette Sharp were charged as accessories after the fact on July 14th for aiding Song's escape from the Prairieland area.
The complaints allege that the group wore black military-style clothing and initiated their attack by shooting fireworks towards the detention center. They also vandalized vehicles and structures with graffiti to lure correctional officers outside. An Alvarado police officer responding to a 911 call was shot upon arrival at the scene.
Song is accused of purchasing firearms used during the ambush and utilizing Signal Chat groups for planning and sharing reconnaissance information about local police departments.
While ten assailants fled but were captured shortly after their attack at Prairieland Detention Center, Song managed to evade law enforcement until his recent arrest. Location data reportedly placed Song near the detention center from late July 4th until dark on July 5th.
Acting U.S. Attorney Nancy E. Larson stated: "After the immediate apprehension of Song’s coconspirators at the scene... Their tremendous efforts culminated in the arrest of this alleged violent criminal today." She added confidence that justice will be swift for those involved in these acts.
FBI Dallas Special Agent in Charge R. Joseph Rothrock emphasized their determination to protect both community members and law enforcement partners targeted during this coordinated attack: "We have said it before; the FBI will not tolerate acts of violence toward law enforcement."
A criminal complaint serves as an allegation rather than evidence; all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court proceedings where most face potential sentences ranging from ten years up to life imprisonment if convicted.
